Our Members

Members of GK are a diverse group of Asian women of varying ages and occupations. They come together for a common purpose — to express their creativity, power and strength through performing the lion and dragon dances, build community and break through stereotypes while upholding the old Chinese saying, “A heroine will not admit defeat to the hero.” To become a member, join our trial class. I had a desire to connect to the Boston Asian community. Gund Kwok gives me an opportunity to do that with a great group of women while challenging myself mentally and physically. I am proud to share this art form with my family and friends.

"I love being in a group of Asian women where there are so many incredible personalities; but one purpose. We strive to perform our best but have a lot of fun while doing it. There's nothing else like it!"

It's a special and wonderful thing to be able to explore both an exciting dance form and my place in the world as an Asian woman. I joined Gund Kwok to find a new challenge; not only did I find that, but I discovered an incredible community of women full of support and spirit!

I like the warm and friendly atmosphere here. Every member is positive, supportive and encouraging. I had never thought I could learn lion dance. Now I can dance like a lion. Gund Kwok provides a platform for me to challenge my potentials, and to connect to the Asian community.

Joining Gund Kwok has allowed me to not only explore my Asian heritage, but also learn from this amazing group about their own experiences and perspectives of being Asian women in America. I am also encouraged to use my strength in ways that I never would have imagined, and I love the challenge of being a lion dancer!

Exercise is like affordable housing - it's hard to do without coupling it to another purpose, be it "urban renewal" (bad reason) or finding cultural fellowship with an amazing group of women (great reason!).
